Arnaldo 's Story

Life I used to live in the Wagner Projects at 2385 First Avenue (which is on 122nd Street) on the 7th floor in Manhattan. I graduated from P.S. 80 (Manhattan, 120th St. & 1st Ave) in 1965, John S. Roberts JHS 45 in 1967 (across the street from P.S. 80), and Harren High School (50th St. & 10th Ave.) in 1971. I remember the first time I had a crush on a girl while she and I attended P.S. 80. Her name was Jenny Manganelli (?) or Maganelli (?). She used to live across the street from me in the Wagner apartment projects on the 13th floor, but I don't remember the address. We were able to phone, talk, and see each other while looking out from our windows. I became very unhappy when she and her family moved away. I never heard from her again. I wish I knew how she was doing. Many of my friends and I along with one of my younger brothers used to play all kinds of sports. It's been such a long time since I've heard from many of them. I found Hector, Henry, and Luis, but not some of the others. All of us would play in the P.S. 80 playground/ballpark hitting homeruns over the fences into the street or behind JHS 45 hitting homeruns over the fences there, and sometimes even on to the roofs at PS80 and JHS45. In order to retrieve the softballs and Spaldings, we'd have to sneek up to the roofs. This was quite challenging and invigorating especially when the schools were closed, but we always seemed to manage. LOL. During my HS years, I dated Ellie. She became pregnant the first time (she was about 14 or 15) during our dating, but had to abort the fetus because her uterus had not fully developed and it (uterus) was also turned upside down. After I joined the USAF and while I was in Basic Training (BT), she let me know she had become pregnant again (16 going on 17). After BT, I went back to NYC to marry her (05 March 1972) since it was the right thing to do. We were married just four days short of 11 years (01 March 1983) during which she gave birth to Magali, Elinor, and Adam. A couple of months after the divorce, she sent me the kids while I was stationed in England since she wasn't able to tolerate them. They were with me from May 83 to Sept 85. Being a single parent was not an easy task, but I tried to do the best I could under the circumstances. Those two years with my kids were the best two years of my life, although I later discovered that the kids found them to be traumatic for them. I joined the U.S. Air Force on 11 January 1972, made it career, and retired from active duty 24 years, 20 days, some hours, some minutes, and some seconds later on 31 January 1996. Joining the USAF has been one of the best decisions I have made in my life. My ex-wife always wanted me to get out, but I'm glad I didn't. I have been living in Florida since I retired from the USAF. Maggie has three children (currently they are my only grandchildren). (Until February or March 2007, it had been over six years since I'd seen either my own children or the grandkids.) I am divorced and have been for almost 26 years now. I am currently unemployed, but still managing to survive off of my USAF pension. My older two half-brothers, Juan "John" Lugo and Edgardo "Eddie" Lugo, graduated from Benjamin Franklin High School in 1961 and 1962, respectively. I also have two younger brothers, Eliud and Hirenaldo. My mother's name is Filomena (Filo), and my father's name was Angel Luis, aka Angelo or Luiso. After I retired from the USAF, I started out living in Citrus Springs, Florida (FL), but now I'm living in Beverly Hills, FL. More information later. Please contact me for any additional information or questions you may have. School (There is more than one Public School (P.S.) 80. e in Brooklyn.) I remember some of my teachers names: Mrs. Carter (2nd grade), Mrs. Koplik (3rd), Mrs. Williams (4th), Mr. Sofferman (5th). I don't remember the others. I remember being shy when it came to meeting girls in JHS 45, but it didn't stop me from having a crush or crushes. :-) Neither my class nor I are in the JHS45 yearbook. I don't remember the reason. Only part of me is in the yearbook on page 16, bottom left, behind the black kid. I was reading (for the photo). I didn't cut class in JHS, but I did start cutting class during my sophomore year in high school. My friends and I used to just ride the trains or we'd go to Central Park. They were Luis, Hector, Raul (Chito), Henry, Ruben (Weekie), Paul, and some others. (When I remember their names, I'll type them in.) Anyway, we'd rush back to school afterwards or go straight home. I still managed to graduate. LOL. I started going to college, but after a few months I was ready to leave the city or just get away anywhere. It was during December 1971 that I decided to join the military. I was having too much trouble trying to study, work part time, live a happy life with my sibblings and parents, and my girlfriend at the time (now my ex-wife). I started seeing the Air Force Recruiter about joining. When all the paperwork was completed and I knew I was leaving, I told my family and girlfriend I had joined the Air Force. Everyone started crying. The Vietnam War was still going strong. Graduating from high school in '71 was one of my happiest days. More later. Military Although I don't remember the Airline that flew me to Lackland AFB, Texas, for Basic Training, I was assigned to the 3728th Student Squadron, Flight 0046, and I do remember arriving in Texas. Getting my hair cutoff. Getting my uniforms. Learning how to march. Meeting new friends. At the start of Basic, whenever we were told to fall-in, I'd fall-in with the rest of the troops. In the beginning, the Training Instructor (TI) would always order us with "If you're taller than the man in front of you, tap him on the shoulder and move up." Well, I didn't know any better at the time so the guy behind me would always tap me on my shoulder. When the TI ordered us to "Right Face", and gave the command of tapping the shoulder again, I'd have to move back again. After a number of weeks in which we would fall-in not only as a flight, but as a squadron or troops, I realized that whenever the TIs gave the command of the shoulder tap, I'd just automatically move to the very back. LMAO. You see, I was always the shortest man in the formation at 5'2". If anyone was shorter than me, it would be a lucky day for me. LOL. Although Basic Training at times felt rough-going, in looking back, they were fun times. While in technical school I was assigned to the 3435th Student Squadron at Lowry AFB, Colorado. I was there from about the last week in February 1972 until about 25 Apr 72. If I remember correctly, the course was for seven weeks; however, since I was doing well, I was able to get accelerated thereby completing the Inventory Management Specialist Course in less that the required seven weeks. After graduating from tech school, my first duty assignment was to the 449th Supply Squadron at Kinchloe AFB, Michigan. Towards the last eight years of my career I discovered I had a knack for fixing and working on computers. Prior to leaving Torrejon AB, Spain, I had a line number for MSgt/E-7. When I arrived at RAF Lakenheath (RAFL), UK, I was able to immediately sew on my new rank. The last six months I was stationed at RAF Lakenheath, UK (from about June '93 to Nov '93) I was responsible for the squadron computers. When I arrived at Whiteman AFB, Missouri, I asked to be assigned to the computer operations as the NCOIC, and I was, so that's where I spent my last three years in the USAF.
